  1. This article is talking about how the Articles of Confederation were replaced with the United States Constitution. They tried to revise the Articles of Confederation to allow the national government to better lead the nation. This gave Congress to much power over members attendance, and would allow them to be punished. The proposal did not go through and the Articles of Confederation remained the same. There were many compromises at the convention. One big debate was about the nummber of representatives from a state depends on population, and most didnt like that. I think the biggest issue though was slavery. The north did not agree with the south and if the south wasnt happy they would just walk out. The final Constitution stated that each state would have the same number of representatives in Senate, but the number of representatives for the House of Representatives would be determined by population. On the slave issue, they decided that they could be imported for 20 years after the Consitution and after that it would be illegal. They also decided that slaves would be counted by every three of five for representation and taxation.

  2. I found this article quite interesting. I never really thought about what it was like to come up with the constitution before and now that I have read this, the issues that they had while trying to change the Articles of Confederation seem obvious. There were problems between debtors and creditors and interstate trade that had to be resolved, they knew that they had to fix or change the Articles of Confederation, but they had a hard time agreeing on a few things, mostly representation and slavery. The north and the south had some problems trying to agree on the slavery and what they should count for and if it should be illegal and such. The small and big states argued over representation in Senate and the House. Both of these issues ended in a compromise which said that importing slaves would be allowed for 20 years then it would be illegal, and by that time hopefully they would be able to start doing away with slavery. The representation issue was compromised by each state getting 2 representatives in Senate and the representatives for House would be determined by population.

  3. This article talks about the popular want for revisions of the Articles of Confederation, and then later composition of the Constitution. Revisions of the Articles of Confederation were wanted because problems with interstate trade and debtors and creditors were rising. A convention was called to make amendments to the articles. Later at the convention a decision was made to abolish the Articles of Confederation completely and begin the composition of the Constitution. The two biggest compromises of the convention dealt with Representation and Slavery. Each state would have 2 senators and the representatives would depend on population. Features of the final draft of the constitution include a final document containing all the compromises of the convention.
This article was very interesting because I had never learned how the constitution actually came to be!

  4. The Articles of Confederation was a document that stated how our country should be ran. But it had some problems to it such as it didn't lead our country well, Congress would punish members for not being in attendance, and Congress would have the exclusive authority to regulate interstate commerce. Congress decided to have a convention and it took awhile to finally get a quorum to start making changes. As the Articles of Confederation was trying to be amended, delegates came about the idea to just get rid of the Articles all together and form a new system of government with three branches: Legislative, Executive, and Judicial. They threw around the idea for awhile then decided to draft the idea and announce it to the public. Then some compromises were to be made. The first one was how many people from each state were to be allowed in the House of Representatives, and the Senate. Roger Sherman came up with the Great Compromise which allowed the House of Representatives to have the number of delegates be based off of the population of each state, and the Senate have 2 representatives from each state. So it was fair to both large and small states. The next compromise was slavery. They wanted to ban slavery all together but the South agreed to have it for only 20 more years. And slaves would count for 3/5 of a person so they would count population wise, and tax wise. 3 drafts were made of the Constitution and it was written by the "Committee of Style" and was sent to the public mid September. All in all they took out the Articles of Confederation and came up with the Constitution. And this is now how our government is ran.

  5. The article opens explaining how the colonies had problems with the regulation of trade and so they wanted to ammend the Articles of Confederation. Then the article goes into explaining that 12 of the 13 colonies got delagates together in Pennsylvania and they took on the task of refining the Articles of Confederation with James madison at the head of the delegation. During the convention the representatives decided to do away with the Articles and replace them with a new constitution while changing the rule for unanimous consent to 9 out of 13. The two hottest issues of discussion were representation and slavery. Under representation, the delegates wanted either representation of a set number of people or representation of a proportion to the population. The delegation eventually compromised on having one house have a set number of 2 senators from each state representing the legislature, and the other house had a representation proportionate to the population of the state. Under slavery, the north wanted to abolish slavery altogether while the south claimed that they depended on slavery economically. The south also wanted to count slaves as people with a vote when it came to representation but not count them when it came to taxes. In the end the delegation all agreed on the 3/5 compromise and the 20 years compromise. The 3/5 compromise stated that slaves counted as 3/5 of a vote and the 20 year compromise said that the south could import slaves for 20 more years but after that it would be illegal. Eventually on July 26 the delegation agreed on a basic framework of a government and appointed a committee of style to put it into writing. With it written the next step was to have the new structured government ratified.

  6. The article starts out to tell us about a named Charles Pinckney. He wanted to revise the Articles so the government could lead a better nation. It goes on to tell us about how 29 representatives from 9 states gathered in independence hall with the sole purpose of proposing amendments. Some problems they had with the Articles of Confederation in the beginning they just wanted to throw the whole idea away and make a new government. Some of the big compromises included slavery and and representation. One compromise they made about slavery stated that slaves could be imported for 24 years after the constitution was ratified. In the finial conclusion, they decided a basic framework for a new government would now replace the confederation. They decided that senators for states would be chosen by a legislation and slaves would be counted as 3/4 person.

  7. This article is about the articles of confederation were replaced with the United State Constitution. James Madison as the head delegate made a meeting at Pennsylvania to discuss about the articles. They wanted to get rid of slavery but the south didn't, they wanted to count them for voting but not for taxes. Years later they came to an agreement. The slaves would count as 3/4 a person. About the compromise each state would have two senators and the representatives would depend on the population, which made the representative issue compromised. That's our government is ran.

  8. This article talked about how the aritcles of confederation weren't working out for our government. The articles of confederation had several problems with them; one of the biggest probles it had was that in order to change something about the articles all the states had to agree on it. Another problem with the aritlces of confederation was the problem of interstate trade. One of the big compromises of the convention was the compromise of the representation. The bigger states wanted to have represenatives based on populations so the more populated states would have more represenatives, while the smaller states wanted to have an equal number of represenatives for each state. They had a big arguement over this until Roger Sherman proposed that the senators have equal numbers from each state and that the represenatives would be based on population. This compromise really helped the convention to move along. Some of the features of the final draft were after 20 years of slave importing it would become illegal, and that slaves would be counted as 3/5ths of a person for voting and taxing issues.

  9. The article starts by telling how there was a lot of contention between the colonies while they were under the Articles of Confederation, and thus there was a large demand for amendments. So delegates for 12 of the 13 colonies met to refine the Articles of Confederation. Though there were many prominent figures at the convention it was James Madison who set a lot of the work in motion. During the meeting two plans were proposed, the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan, these two plans led to what is called the Great Compromise. This compromise said that Senate the representatives of the states- no matter the size- would remain the equal, while in the House of Representatives they would be based on population. The next major compromise was the 3/5 Compromise, which says three-fifths of the slaves were to be counted for population as well as for the sake of taxing. There were three drafts of the Constitution which were written by the "Committee of Style”. The final draft from the convention was sent, along with a Letter of Transmittal, to Congress, which quickly forwarded it on for ratification.

  10. the convention didnt start off to well at all with Rhoad Island no even being part of it. then the convention didnt even start on time. but once they got on track they never looked back. a major compromise they had was bring more stability to the nation as a whole. James Madison "the father of the constitition"saying that a strong central government will be needed to run the nation as a whole, was a great idea.

  11. In reading this article one some of the problems I found with the Articles of Confederation were the proposed amendments would have given the Congress the exclusive authority to regulate interstate commerce, and they would also punish the commerce for poor attendance. In my opinion some of the big compromises at the convention was when James Madison set the tone and was a key contributor to the convention and was later referred to as the "Father of Constitution".

  12. This article talks about how the Constitution came to be. It talked about several of the amendments (such as slavery, representatiom) and how they compromised each amendment to save the constitution and pass it. There were a lot of arguments with the constitution, and in the end called for a lot of compromise. With representation, the compromise was that each state would have two senators, and then the population would decide how many were in the house of representatives. With slavery, they decided that they could import slaves for twenty years after the constitution went into effect.
This article was a big review for me, because in 8th grade, I watched a movie about this and the whole process of making the constitution, so this was a big review, and now I remember what happened in the movie.

  13. The article describes the downfall of the articles of confederation, and the new beginning of our constitution. The articles of confederation didn't give equal power to colonies and, every colony had to agree on issues to change the articles of confederation. The Virginia Plan, The Great Compromise, and The three-fifths Compromise. The Great Compromise was the idea that each state was represented equally no matter what the population was. The Three Fifths Compromise allowed states with slaves to count them for representation but not for taxes by only counting 3 out of 5 slaves. The Constitution had some of the same characteristics of the Articles of Confederation and the problems would soon be found.

  14. When trying to come up with a new constitution for the nation, the northern and southern states did not a agree on many things such as representation and slavery. Eventually they all came to a compromise. For the issue of representation the Great Compromise was established. And for slavery Three-Fifths Compromise. Though they felt the slavery issue hadn't been completely solved.

  15. They tried to fix the Articles of Confederation before they replaced them. They tried multiple times but failed so they decided to make a new one called the United States Constitution. That's all I really pulled from this article. The rest of it sounded like gibberish...

  16. This talks about how the Articles of Confederation broke down and how the constitution began. The Articles of Confederation didn't give equal power to all of the colonies. Plus, all of the colonies had to agree on an issue before it could be changes. So it made it really hard to get things done. The Great Compromise said that all colonies are equal no matter what the population was. The Three-Fifths compromise said that for every 5 slaves they would only count 3 for tax reasons, and for population votes. The Virginia Compromise was another one. The final draft had some of the same problems as the Articles of Confederation.

  17. I found this article quite interesting. It talked about the Articles of Confederation being replaced completely by the United States Constitution. Personally I think that it was a good idea because our constitution has held strong over the past hundreds of years. Our government is pretty good. The constitution was not easy to get done with. There were many amendments and compromises. Even though it took roughly 3-4 months to get the constitution into writing it was definitely worth it.

  19. After a few debates, they decided that they could not fix the Articles of Confederation, and they had to start from scratch. They established many points that were crucial to the success of the United States.
The problems with the Articles of Confederation mainly included problems between debtors and creditors and interstate trade.
Two crucial compromises of the convention were the Great Compromise and the Three-Fifths Compromise.
The Great Compromise was essential in order to keep the smaller states. I think without the bicameral legislature they established, the convention never would have succeeded.
the Three-Fifths Compromise temporally allowed slavery trading for 20 years. This allowed to the constitution to be established and was necessary for the time being.

I liked how they established a "Committee of Style" to make the finished writing of the Constitution. It proved to me that they wanted nothing less than the best for their completed work and to show what they had finally agreed upon.

  20. This article is about the articles of confederation were replaced with the United State Constitution. I think that this was good because for the past 100 years the Constitution has worked well for us! It also talked about a few of the amendments and how they had to compromise each one to pass the Constitution..

  22. This article is all about the long and difficult process of how constitution came about. From day one the debtors and creditors had disagreements with each other on the Articles of Confederation. Then the Confederal Congress came into the picture and tried to give congress the exclusive authority to regulate interstate commerce, which means they would have further empowered the Congress to punish members for poor attendance at legislative sessions. In result the convention had to make some compromises, two big examples being representation and slavery. Slavery was never truly fixed at that moment in time, but they just made it work for right then, and kind of just put it off for later. Between the debated and revisions it took two months for the Constitution’s final version to be published.
